Project specifications

The University of Tasmania’s Cradle Coast Campus in Burnie proudly features a 2,023m² green roof, designed and installed by Fytogreen Australia. This extensive roof garden, completed in February 2021, showcases over 11,000 native plants from 27 species, creating a vibrant ecosystem atop the university’s teaching and learning building. The project, led by Philip Leighton Architects, Room 11, and John Wardle Architects, with landscape architecture by ASPECT Studios and construction by Fairbrother Southern Construction, has become a focal point for sustainability and community engagement. Richard Ingram from UTAS highlights the green roof’s popularity, noting numerous requests for site tours. The roof not only enhances biodiversity but also serves as an educational tool and a model for sustainable design. Recognized with the 2022 Australian Institute of Architects Tasmanian Chapter Architecture Award for Educational Architecture, this project exemplifies innovation in green infrastructure
